Access to psilocybin treatments

Psilocybin is a psychoactive substance found in over 200 species of fungi.

There is scientific evidence on the therapeutic potential of psilocybin to treat mental health problems in a clinical setting. It is indicated that psilocybin is effective in treating depression when given alongside therapy. Research into its use for treating other mental health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, is ongoing.

Psilocybin has not yet reached the market as a treatment for mental health conditions in the UK.

Currently in the UK, psilocybin is classified as a Schedule 1 substance under the Misuse of Drugs Regulation 2001, which means that psilocybin is considered to have no therapeutic use and therefore cannot be lawfully prescribed or possessed. As a result of this classification, any research into psilocybin requires a license from the Home Office, bureaucracy which is a significant barrier to any research on its therapeutic effects.

An E Petition in 2023 gained 11,824 votes.

If you have Read More and would like to share your support for more clinical trials and support the proposal for rescheduling psilocybin from the currently held Schedule 1 classification for spurring research benefitting patients and the UK healthcare & life sciences sector.

Please give it a thumbs up!

Psychedelic Nursing UK is part of establishing reliable protocols, rigorous scientific conduct, and ethical practices to shed the stigma surrounding psychedelic medicine.

Humans have used hallucinogens for thousands of years, interest in their clinical use for the treatment of mental illness began in the 1950s, when active compounds were first isolated. Restrictive laws came into place in the 1960–70s limiting their medical use and investigation.

Psychedelic drugs have been positive in the treatment of addiction, anxiety, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and end-of-life care among other complex and difficult to treat conditions.
